Baylor Scott & White Heart Transplant team excels at American Transplant Congress

The heart transplant team from Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas (Baylor Dallas), part of Baylor Scott & White Health, played a prominent role at the American Transplant Congress (ATC) meeting, held June 3 – 7, 2023 in San Diego, CA. A joint annual meeting of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American Society of Transplantation (AST), the forum exchanges new clinical information on tissue and solid organ transplantation and provides education on cutting-edge advances and research. The conference brings together transplant physicians, scientists, nurses, organ procurement personnel, pharmacists and allied health professionals.

Baylor Scott & White Research Institute investigators and clinicians on the medical staff at Baylor Dallas were responsible for more than 10 presentations, scheduled talks, education sessions and discussions. Topics ranged from heart transplant rejection surveillance protocol using cell-free DNA testing, malnutrition and mortality after heart transplantation, and outcomes of LVAD implantation on early to late weekdays to evaluations of new technologies and implications of sleep disorders in heart transplantation. Each of these talks reflected the commitment of the experienced team at Baylor Scott & White Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute to advance clinical care in the field of heart transplantation.

Members of the heart transplant team also received several notable recognitions at the meeting, including:

• Shelley Hall, MD, FACC, FHFSA, FAST, chief, transplant cardiology, mechanical circulatory support and advanced heart failure, Baylor Dallas, was named a member-at-large of the AST board of directors.
• Cesar Y. Guerrero-Miranda, MD, FACC, medical director, mechanical circulatory support, advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, Baylor Dallas, was inducted as a fellow of the AST.
• Nicole Wilson, PharmD, received the very prestigious Distinguished Early Career Award from the AST.
• Shiva Patlolla, MD and Aymen Saeyeldin, MD, heart transplant program fellows at Baylor Dallas, were awarded travel grants for presenting their research.
