Procedures

Each fellow performs up to 1,200 surgeries and procedures, including:

  • 300 to 400 major abdominal procedures
  • 300 to 400 anorectal procedures
  • 400 to 600 colonoscopies

In addition to the active inpatient service, residents treat outpatients in a weekly clinic and assist surgeons in the practices.

Fellows also participate in various clinical trials at Baylor Scott & White Health research facilities.

Conferences

Fellows attend weekly didactic conferences encompassing all aspects of colorectal disease, including radiology and pathology. Fellows also attend a biweekly gastrointestinal cancer conference and book conference, as well as a bimonthly journal club.

A weekly basic science conference gives the residents experience in presenting basic colorectal diseases in a faculty-supported, high-level conversation. Case management conferences bring difficult cases for discussion in the areas of IBD, pelvic floor disorders, stage diseases, and emergency and elective settings. The multidisciplinary team discussions of all colorectal cancer cases provide decision-making for cancer cases.
