Residency

Patient population

The high volume of skin cancers seen by Baylor Scott & White Health in Central Texas allows our residents to perform Mohs layers, grafts and flaps – often as the primary surgeon. Our residents have the benefit of hands-on surgical training through their residency.

Electives

Residents are provided ample opportunity to pursue elective rotations and explore any specific areas of interest.

Continuity clinic

Our continuity clinic, which begins during PGY2, provides residents experience following the progression of their patients and the patients’ response to treatment.

Call schedule

Residents take call one week at a time, alternating between the residents. They also cover inpatient consults for one month at a time, for an average of three months during their residency training.

Conferences

Conferences are led both by faculty and residents. A faculty member is present for almost all lectures to be available for clarification and to provide high quality.

Grand rounds and consult conferences are held monthly to expose residents to more unusual and/or complicated cases.

Research

Dermatology residents actively participate in research, publications and presentations at regional and national meetings. One quality improvement project is expected throughout the residency as well as one publication submission per year.

Required research and scholarly activities are supported by the allotment of protected time, mentorship by assigned faculty members and financial support through grants provided by the Research and Education Division.

Monetary support is available each year to residents presenting poster or podium presentations at Texas Dermatologic Society and American Academy of Dermatology meetings.
