Important information for patients with Humana Medicare Advantage health insurance

We are currently negotiating with Humana to reach a new network agreement by January 1, 2025, to keep Humana Medicare Advantage plan holders in network with our providers and facilities. If an agreement is not reached before December 31, 2024, Humana Medicare Advantage plan holders will have to change providers or be faced with higher out-of-pocket costs.

Our patients are our top priority, and we are working to minimize any potential disruptions. You have two timely options to help ensure you have in-network coverage in the new year:

  • Certain patients who are actively engaged in treatment may be eligible to continue receiving care at in-network rates. To apply for continuity of care with Humana, call the customer service phone number on the back of your insurance card. Please note that Humana’s review of your request may take time, and approval is not guaranteed.
  • Contact the health insurance agent or agency that helped you purchase your current Medicare Advantage plan and explore new options such as the following insurers that include that includes Baylor Scott & White in its network:

Note: Now is the best time to consider a change to your health plan. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) ends on December 7.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is happening?

Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) is currently negotiating a new contract to cover care for patients with Humana Medicare Advantage health insurance. We are working to reach an agreement before December 31, 2024, to keep Humana Medicare Advantage plan holders in network for care with our providers, hospitals and facilities. Our patients are our top priority, and we are working to minimize any potential disruptions.

  • How does this impact BSWH patients?

Patients should continue to visit Baylor Scott & White providers, hospitals and facilities as they normally would through the month of December. If an agreement is not reached before December 31, 2024, our providers, hospitals and facilities will be considered out of network for Humana Medicare Advantage members. This could mean increased costs—or restricted access—for Humana Medicare Advantage patients who want to continue receiving care from a BSWH provider or facility.

  • What do I do if I need to schedule a new appointment?

Out of an abundance of caution to protect our patients’ expenses, we are no longer accepting appointments for Humana Medicare Advantage patients after December 31, 2024.

  • What if I have an appointment with my Baylor Scott & White provider scheduled on or after January 1, 2025?

Contact the health insurance agent or agency that helped you purchase your current Medicare Advantage plan and explore new options such as the following insurers that include Baylor Scott & White in its network:

Now is the best time to consider a change to your health plan. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) ends on December 7.

Certain patients who are actively engaged in treatment may be eligible to continue receiving care at in-network rates through continuity of care. To apply for continuity of care with Humana, call the customer service phone number on the back of your insurance card. Please note that Humana’s review of your request may take time, and approval is not guaranteed.

If you are unable to obtain a continuity of care exception through Humana, services provided after December 31, 2024, will be considered out of network—and your Humana Medicare Advantage benefits may not cover your care. If that happens, first ask Humana if you have out-of-network coverage.

  • What if I am receiving treatment for a special condition on or after the date the agreement ends?

Certain patients, including those who are hospitalized or undergoing an active course of treatment before the contract end date, may qualify for continuity of care through Humana. If you think you may qualify, call the phone number on the back of your Humana health insurance card to request a continuity of care form and apply. Please note that Humana’s review of your request may take time, and approval is not guaranteed.

  • What if I have an elective procedure scheduled at a Baylor Scott & White facility on or after the date the agreement ends?

If an agreement is not reached before December 31, 2024, you will need to obtain a continuity of care exception through Humana; otherwise, services provided after this date will be considered out of network. If that happens, your out-of-pocket costs may be greater or your access restricted. If you think you may qualify, call the phone number on the back of your Humana health insurance card to request a continuity of care form and apply. Please note that Humana’s review of your request may take time, and approval is not guaranteed.

  • What if I have a medical emergency on or after the date the agreement ends, and Baylor Scott & White is out of network?

If you experience a medical emergency, you should always visit the nearest emergency department. Humana will pay for services that its Medicare Advantage members receive to evaluate and stabilize an emergency medical condition, regardless of whether your care is received from an in-network or out-of-network emergency department.
