Biography
|
Richard D. Rhodes, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who sees patients in Frisco and Plano. He specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder ... and knee, treating a wide range of sports injuries and orthopedic conditions, including ACL tears, meniscus injuries, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, shoulder dislocations, knee ligament injuries and arthritis. His expertise includes ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic knee surgery, arthroscopic shoulder surgery, rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder stabilization procedures and shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Rhodes is dedicated to helping athletes and active individuals of all ages return to the activities they enjoy. He provides advanced surgical and non-surgical treatment options for sports-related injuries, leveraging the latest techniques to restore function, relieve pain and optimize recovery. Dr. Rhodes is among the first surgeons in North Texas to offer advanced ACL restoration procedures using innovative implant technology that helps preserve and heal the patient's own ligament. Unlike traditional ACL reconstruction, which requires replacing the torn ligament with a tendon graft, this approach supports the body's natural healing process. The implant, a resorbable bovine collagen scaffold, is gradually replaced by the patient's own tissue, blood vessels and collagen, allowing the ACL to heal while maintaining its natural anatomy. Potential benefits include preserving the native ligament, avoiding graft harvest from another part of the body, maintaining normal knee anatomy and potentially reducing the risk of re-injury. This innovative approach may be especially beneficial for younger athletes and active individuals seeking to return to sports while preserving natural knee function. Click here to read about a young patient of Dr. Rhodes who successfully had this procedure and the impact it's had on an athlete who is still growing. As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Rhodes remains at the forefront of emerging orthopedic technologies and treatment techniques, offering patients access to advanced options for ACL tears, knee ligament injuries and sports-related knee conditions. After earning his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Rhodes completed his orthopedic surgery residency and additional specialized training in arthroscopy and sports medicine. He further advanced his expertise through training with two of the nation's leading shoulder surgeons at Tampa General Hospital. A recognized leader in sports medicine, Dr. Rhodes currently serves as the lead team orthopedic surgeon for the WNBA's Dallas Wings. He is also the lead orthopedic surgeon for the College Football Shrine Bowl and serves as an orthopedic consultant for the NFL Players Association and the Cotton Bowl. Throughout his career, he has cared for professional, collegiate, high school and amateur athletes, including competitors from the WNBA, NFL, professional tennis, mixed martial arts, CrossFit and numerous North Texas high school athletic programs. Dr. Rhodes combines extensive experience caring for professional, collegiate and high school athletes with a passion for sports medicine education. He was a featured contributor to Dave Campbell's Texas Football's Recruiting Guide for Parents presented by Baylor Scott & White, helping families better understand the college recruiting process and how student-athletes can position themselves for success on and off the field. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rhodes is passionate about sports medicine education and community outreach. Patients appreciate
The overwhelming majority of reviews praise Dr. Richard Rhodes, Jr. for being thorough, knowledgeable, and an excellent listener who takes time to answer questions and explain diagnoses, imaging, and treatment options in clear, understandable terms. Many patients highlight his direct, honest communication style paired with genuine kindness and a caring, respectful bedside manner, and several note that he presents multiple treatment paths—often favoring conservative or non-invasive options before recommending surgery—without pressuring them into a particular choice. Surgical outcomes, including knee, shoulder, and rotator cuff procedures, are frequently described as successful, and many patients mention that his staff and support team are equally professional, courteous, and efficient, contributing to smooth, timely appointments. A number of long-term patients and multi-generational families say they trust him completely and continue to return for various orthopedic needs.
Patients also share
A smaller number of reviews point to areas for improvement. One review described Dr. Rhodes as having terrible bedside manner, being abrupt and impatient, while another separate review mentioned he seemed disturbed or reluctant to see patients that day. Another single review noted a lack of eye contact during explanations, and one patient felt he showed more interest in certain symptoms than others and wasn't very empathetic when she became emotional, though she still appreciated his reassurance. A separate review mentioned dissatisfaction that he had not personally examined their knee during two post-op visits, and one patient experienced neuropraxia in the leg and foot following surgery, though this was addressed with troubleshooting afterward.
