Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, and subsequently completed an integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency training program at Columbia University in New York. During this time, he also completed a 1-year research fellowship for which he received the John Jones Research Society award for his efforts in advancing the science of cardiac surgery.
