Benefits of attending cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation

The cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation team helps patients develop a healthy lifestyle plan. The heart-healthy plan includes major physical activity components, education, stress management and nutrition counseling. Monitored physical activity increases the efficiency of the patient's heart and lungs and strengthens their muscles, helping them return to a normal lifestyle.

Based on each individual's personal goals, the benefits received from rehabilitation may vary. Benefits may include:

  • Strengthening and conditioning of your heart and lungs
  • Controlling your weight and lowering your total cholesterol levels
  • Understanding your medications, the signs and symptoms of heart disease and when to seek medical attention
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Laying the groundwork for the development of a healthier lifestyle
  • Reducing your symptoms and chances of experiencing another cardiac event
  • An earlier return to work and daily activities
  • Developing coping and stress reduction skills, as well as relaxation techniques
  • Providing emotional support for you and your family

SET for PAD benefits may include:

  • Improving functional capacity
  • Decrease in painful symptoms and increase leg strength over time
  • Reducing additional risks associated with PAD

What to expect at cardiac and pulmonary rehab in Waxahachie

The cardiac rehabilitation program at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Waxahachie is carefully designed to accommodate the individual needs of every cardiac and pulmonary patient. Participants typically spend three to 12 weeks in rehabilitation, attending three weekly sessions. The length of individual programs may depend upon individual patient goals, the progress of the patient's recovery or the patient's physician's recommendation.

Cardiac rehabilitation

During the activity sessions, the cardiac rehabilitation program team will monitor the patient with an electrocardiograph (ECG) telemetry unit to inform them how the patient and their heart react and adapt to the activity. Patients also learn how to take their pulse, determine their exercise intensity and exercise at a level that allows them maximum benefits.

Care for ventricular assist device patients

During the activity sessions, the Waxahachie Cardiac Rehabilitation Program team will monitor the patient with an electrocardiograph (ECG) telemetry system to keep them informed of how the patient and the patient’s heart is reacting and adapting to activity.

Pulmonary rehabilitation

For pulmonary rehabilitation activity sessions, you will be monitored for any shortness of breath during exercise. The team uses a small, non-invasive fingertip pulse oximeter to observe your blood's oxygen level and monitor your heart rate. For those dependent on oxygen therapy, oxygen will be readily available.

Those participating in pulmonary rehab will also learn to regulate exercise intensity to support and improve their health.

Supervised exercise therapy for peripheral artery disease

During supervised exercise therapy (SET) for peripheral artery disease (PAD) sessions, you are encouraged to complete three sessions per week supervised by an interdisciplinary team of nurses, an exercise physiologist and a dietitian. To build your strength and exercise tolerance, you will be encouraged to reach a pain tolerance level and continue to improve your tolerance during each session.
